The Beauty Blog
March 11, 2019
A beauty blog isn’t an uncommon feature in our modern world. Millions around the world are willing to use Instagram and Snapchat everyday for quick tips for beauty and skin care. Though many in our school may not know they can turn to Laura Sherif, a freshman blogger at Heritage High School, for advice. She has been managing, @Sxlfcarebible, her personal beauty blog on Instagram for the past year.
“I had followed some before I made one and I thought they were really cool, and I really, really like skin care, like I had always liked skin care. So I decided to make one and it’s pretty fun it’s like managing and stuff.”
Laura had been following skin care blogs before she took a leap and made one herself at the beginning of 2018. Her blog focuses on skin/hair care and school tips for a wide range of followers. Her account is a fun way for her to share tips she has learned herself with the public. Posting on a regular basis takes a large amount of time, research, and courage to put yourself out in the open, but Laura has no issues with the publicity and workload.
“It was pretty easy, most people who make these self care accounts are in high school or around my age, so I just made one.”
Laura’s blog experienced a design and format change over the summer. Her procedure consists of posting an article on her Twitter account, taking a screenshot of it, and last posting the screenshot on Instagram so her followers would only see a preview of the story. After this successful adjustment, her blogs following blew up to 14.2k followers throughout the summer. Laura posts every day and each one is premeditated, so she can balance her research and school without any problems.
When looking around on Instagram you may stumble upon @Sxlfcarebible. Her account is public and open to anyone, “In the beginning I advertised it. I asked bigger accounts to give me shout outs and stuff, but now I just let people come.”
Her research operation for a product takes about a week of testing a product, writing reviews, and recommend it to people. The product does not always get tested by her, however if it has been raved about by a large majority she will make a list of products for people to try themselves with a disclaimer stating it may not work everyone. She looks for products that have worked for a large majority of people and make sure that it gets out to others.
“I read a lot of magazines, like the Cosmopolitan, magazines like that. If I see a product being raved over and over again I’ll probably try it and recommend it to people.”
Along with the workload Laura manages for her beauty accounts, she is also the Social Media Manager of the 2019 Pride Journalism class. She’s the one that manages the Paw Prints social media footprint, tags, and so much more. Her work is amazing now and it’s hard to imagine what it will bloom into in the future. Keep an eye out for @Sxlfcarebible if you need any beauty tips because Laura has many for you.
