Salt to the Sea By Ruta Sepetys

Salt to the Sea By Ruta Sepetys

Amna Farooq, Staff Writer

Inspirational novel based on a true story from World War II. East Persia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate hunt for freedom. This story takes place in the early 1945 it portrays the disturbing circumstances about a German ship sinking, with many civilians and refugees, including children, almost, all drowned.

The main storyline revolves around the four central characters, Emilia, Florian, Joana, Alfred. The story is told from different viewpoints of all the four characters. The beginning of the story is a little confusing and boring but around the 20th page the story starts to get enjoyable and interesting. During the first read of this book I did not know was historical fiction. During my second read the story did hit differently knowing it is based on a real life event. I read the book multiple times, and I’m usually very picky with books since not many books please me. Each time you read the book there is something new in the nuances of the writing that you didn’t realize before.

If I were to rate the book out of ten I would give it a nine. The unique and historical element really adds to the story and it has many plot twists that add to the plot. I enjoyed some parts of the story but others. I was not really pleased with some of the plot twists (why did Emilia have to die) which I like because it makes the story more intriguing. There was specifically one plot twist that made me really sad but I do not want to spoil anything. Overall I would say this book is a must read.
