Series Review: Wednesday

Rachael Hargis, Staff Writer

Whether or not you are familiar with the conspicuously gothic Addams Family that has continued to be a spectacle of the public eye for decades, this new spin-off to the original series will not disappoint.  Since there have been several, similar adaptations of the original screenplay over the years, many may wonder how this new series has garnered newfound global attention since its recent release.

The answer is in the title: Wednesday. Rather than focusing on the family as a whole and leaving wide gaps of indistinction and ambiguity between the family members, the show fixates on the eldest child who is navigating her teenage years. Not only does this give depth to a character that has previously had her personality limited to being grim, but it allows the story to reach a larger demographic that relates to her adolescent struggles.

The new setting, Nevermore, Wednesday’s school that has been created for outcasts, gives fresh scenery from the Addams’ residence. A large part of Wednesday’s success is due to its twist on the original story; however, credit is also due to the writers maintaining the integrity of the previous movies/series. While Wednesday shows more growth and complexity of her emotions in this series, she still keeps her sharp wit and blunt, sarcastic remarks under her belt. Similarly, the addition of new locations and characters didn’t take away from the original style and fashion of the Addams Family. I would give this show a 10/10.
