Several adaptations of the Grimm’s fairy tales exist; however, Melissa Albert takes a dark twist by removing the “happily ever after” virus that often gives readers a false perception of reality. The story follows Alice Proserpine, a 17 year old girl who is constantly on the run from her bad luck. Even though her mother stays quiet when Alice questions what caused the bad luck, Alice begins to assume that it has something to do with her grandmother, Althea Proserpine, an infamous fairy tale writer that allegedly passed away. Alice’s skepticism is pushed under the rug until she comes home to find her mother missing. With the help of her schoolmate, she goes on a journey to rescue her mother. The book is really good because it always keeps you on your toes. I would give it a 9/10.
