Inventing Anna Review

Inventing Anna Review

The new Netflix original series, Inventing Anna, takes artistic liberties when portraying the real life of Anna Delvey, also known as Anna Sorokin. Anna is first introduced as a criminal guilty of fraud on multiple accounts, as she tricked New York socialites into thinking she was a German heiress with a hefty trust fund. Because of her great acting skills, she was able to scam hundreds of thousands of dollars out of large corporations with ease. Despite it being obvious that she was guilty of these crimes, Anna continued to deny the accusations and painted herself as a successful business. The bulk of the show dissects the backstory behind Anna’s crimes and her flagrant personality. Prior to taking on the role, Julia Garner met Anna Delvey in person in order to perfect her character. The actress did a great job of imitating the real Anna Delvey’s mannerisms and suspicious German accent which seems to have hints of Russian in it. Even though the other characters weren’t necessarily accurate depictions of their real-life counterparts, I was happy that they kept the integrity of the protagonist. Furthermore, the exaggerated characterization of Anna’s acquaintances, for example, made for a much more engaging and humorous show. Lastly, I appreciated how the series showed the different sides of Anna rather than just deeming her as a heartless criminal. By showing different events that happened in her childhood and adolescence, the audience was able to get a better idea of why Anna behaved the way she did. I would give the series a 10/10.
