Moth Smoke by Mohsin Hamid revolves around DaraShikoh Shehzad in 1998, who is a banker in Lahore Pakistan. After arguing with a customer he ends up getting fired from his job. After losing his job he starts struggling financially. During the time period of him losing his job and struggling financially, he meets up with one of his old friends Ozi who just arrived home after spending several years in the U.S. Ozi is rich and lives a life of luxury. Daru the main character becomes envious of his friend’s luxuriant lifestyle. In order to make money he starts participating in crime and eventually gets arrested for murder.

After Daru is put in jail the main point of the story shifts to his trials and the final verdict. Overall, I enjoyed the book, there were a lot of plot twists and intriguing factors in the book. The book also focuses on many flaws in the society of the time which makes the story more interesting. If I were to rate this book I would give it a 9/10. Even though I enjoyed it I definitely wouldn’t read it again because I already know the storyline which takes away from the intrigue factor. I would highly recommend this book.
