This year holds an extraordinary range of top travel destinations. From coastlines in the Mediterranean to the historic city of Rome, this summer will be nothing short of unforgettable. Europe holds first place for most popular summer destinations for Americans. Europe holds so much different culture, food, and amazing scenery and coastlines that can’t be missed. From rustic towns, beautiful beaches, and exciting summer festivals, Europe holds so many hidden gems.
Starting in southeastern Europe, Croatia holds a stunning Adriatic coastline. If you prefer land, then enjoy time in the rustic, medieval, old city, covered by limestone walls that border the beautiful crystal-blue sea. It has been loved by tourists for over 40 years and continues to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing coastal destinations in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia is known for its charming city and striking scenery. Looking for a slightly more exotic experience? Take a short 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik to the island of Lokrum. Lokrum holds a lush forest of botanical gardens, rocky beaches, and free roaming peacocks! Other experiences include swimming in some of the clearest water, enjoying the historic walls of an old Benedictine monastery, and even private boat tours past the walls of the island and into nearby caves. When visiting Croatia during the summer, expect warm, long evenings, rocky coves that are free to swim through, and local, fresh caught seafood!
While on the topic of fresh food, Greece has high-flavored, intensely fresh tomatoes that have been ripened by the sun. Santorini, a volcanic island that is a part of the Cyclades, is a super iconic summer destination. Greece is known for its villages of whitewashed buildings, and its gorgeous, bright-blue accents. The cliffside views leave tourists speechless.
Though, it is recommended to arrive earlier in the season, so that it is possible to enjoy the architecture before the flood of people arrive. Santorini is home to one of the few active volcanoes on European land. Nea Kameni, an active volcano that is in the center of Santorini, is available to see through tours and boat rides. It is also possible to hike up to the craters, as well as experience the hot springs made up of hot, sulfurous water. Whether it’s a romantic getaway, a girls trip, or a family vacation, Santorini is an island of charm waiting for you to discover it.
The Amalfi Coast, Italy, is heaven on Earth. The Amalfi Coast, a dream destination spot, is in Southern Italy and is made up of many small towns such as Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. The coast itself stretches for over 30 miles between Naples and Salerno. While enjoying the smell of fresh lemons, tasting handmade pasta with fresh seafood, and overlooking the beautiful ocean, an afternoon could not be better. Positano is full of small alley ways through town that can be taken in order to get to the beach. These alleys are lined with shops that sell handmade goods that are as unique as the town itself. One thing that the Amalfi Coast is especially known for is the colorful, handcrafted ceramics. Made with gorgeous, vibrant colors, and special patterns, these dishes are all of the best parts of Italy painted on pottery.

If the coast is not what was in mind, then a way to see Italy from a different perspective is through visiting the city of Rome. Known as the Eternal City, Rome is made up of ancient cobblestone streets lined with hidden ruins and monuments that you’d never expect to find at a street corner. Of course, the nearly 2,000 year old Colosseum and Pantheon are must sees. While technically a different city, Vatican City, ruled by and home of the Pope, contains one of the most famous chapels in the world, the Sistine Chapel. After spending a day in Vatican City, grab dinner and gelato at one of the many amazing, authentic restaurants, and then stop by the Trevi Fountain for an unforgettable end to the day.
European countries provide so many different experiences and sights than what is seen in the United States. It is beguiling and enjoyable for many people who get out of the country and encounter these different cultures and groups of people. Sometimes, it takes stepping out of your comfort zone in order to see what the rest of the world has to offer. The world is a beautiful place that deserves to be seen. So, go to your dream destination and enjoy Europe to its fullest potential!
