The Mighty Midget, a beloved burger and hotdog stand which was first placed next to what is now Mom’s Apple Pie in Leesburg, Virginia, has been restored and put back in its original location. The Mighty Midget, which is made out of metal from old WWII airplane parts, was open from 1947 into the early 1990’s. In 2001, B’z BBQ Company sold smoked meat and sandwiches behind and through the Midget. It was soon moved to the lawn of a nearby restaurant called MacDowell Brew Kitchen where it sold döner kebabs, a type of fast-food sandwich that originated in Germany made by Turkish immigrants. However, this last location of the functioning restaurant closed in 2019. Shortly after its closing, the town of Leesburg quickly began the job of restoring this vintage food stand.
The week of October 20, 2025, the original aluminum structure which the town had carefully preserved, was placed next to Leesburg’s Mom’s Apple Pie, where it was almost 30 years ago. The current lease holder of the Mighty Midget and owner of Mom’s Apple Pie – Avis Renshaw, has stated that in order to prepare the Midget for reopening, it has taken lots of time, preparation, and money to be able to restore it to its original look and use. Renshaw has also said that she hopes to bring back as much of the old menu as possible. She told
that “it’s the original food truck without wheels.” Renshaw plans to use local ingredients to make the food, including local crops and livestock.
The citizens of Leesburg are anxious to have this iconic food stand back where it was. Renshaw stated to LoudounNow, “Not only is it Leesburg’s first fast food restaurant, but it may be the next.” The date for the full opening is unsure, but what is sure is the excitement for the returning Mighty Midget Kitchen, and hopefully it’s iconic neon sign!
