What is a government shutdown? A government shutdown is when Congress and the President fail to approve funding legislation, leading to a lapse in appropriations. This forces non-essential federal government functions to cease, and non-essential employees are put on furlough without pay. Essential services, like national defense and border security, continue, with essential workers required to work without pay until funding is approved. The first government shutdown was on November 23rd, 1983, after president Ronald Reagan vetoed a proposed appropriation bill that contained a reduced set of spending cuts that he had proposed for select government departments. It caused 241,000 workers to go on something called furlough. Furlough is a temporary, unpaid leave of absence from work that an employer may mandate for employees due to a lack of funds or workers.
In 2025 the government was shut down for a long period of time. It was shut down for 43 days. On October 1, 2025, the federal government of the United States entered a shutdown at midnight EDT after the U.S. Congress failed to pass appropriations legislation for the 2026 fiscal year, which began that day. In simpler terms they shut down because they didn’t have enough funds to fund their workers. Many families were impacted by the shutdown. For example, it really affected me because my dad works for the government, and he wasn’t bringing any money home, so it was really hard for my family to do things we wanted to do without having to worry about money. I knew many other Heritage students whose families were in the the same position as mine during the shutdown.
Loudoun County has one of the highest federal employment rates with 17.2%, and nearly 12% of Loudoun County workers are related to the government shutdown. Henceforth, in Loudoun County, it was hard for people to get hired in a federal jobs during the shutdown because of hiring freezes and closed government agencies. As part of the Northern region of Virginia, directly outside of Washington D.C, Loudoun County was definitely been impacted by the government shutdown.
The government shutdown also affected the people that benefited from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) across the country. SNAP is basically just food stamps with a fancy name. The reason some people were affected by this is because many people don’t have the money to go out and buy food, groceries, or even toilet paper for themselves and they rely on the government to provide them with food and many other things they may need. SNAP provides discounts on certain foods like fish, milk, cheese, and snacks.
The government shutdown caused 1.4 million federal workers to go without pay for a month. Affecting people from the top of the top of government officials to the bottom of the food chain, With people from making 200k to little to no money at all. Even though the government shutdown may be over, there are still many of people still being affected by this as people are still trying to get caught up in their bills, financial responsibilities, and paying late fees. Therefore, the government should always try hard to work together because these shutdowns affect American families on a very personal level.
