Teenagers are stereotypically known for staying up late and sleeping in. This might be true in some cases, but like children and adults, teenagers also need enough sleep in order to function.
Sleep is a basic human need. Humans need sleep in order to function the right way. With the teens’ brain still developing, it’s important to recognize that their brain can only develop well with enough sleeping hours. The lack of sleep teens experience could cause malfunctions in the brain like poor decision making, processing information, and even caring for themselves. These malfunctions can even lead to mental illnesses such as ADHD and depression.
A study found that sleeping 9-10 hours a night can help a teen rebuild their muscles, help their brains work harder, and prevent infections. Sleeping can also help a teen’s mental health improve, and many teens struggle with mental health issues; therefore, it is important to know how sleeping could benefit teenager’s mental health and stop them from struggling. In particular, scientists found that getting enough sleep will improve a teens mood, reduce stress and regulate their emotions.
It might not seem like it, but there is a connection between sleep and a person’s physical health. Not getting enough sleep could affect the natural hormones in a teenagers body, and potentially cause the off-balance of melatonin and growth hormones. Decreased motivation to do anything physical could also occur with the lack of sleep. One’s diet and energy could become irregular due to impairing metabolism. Gaining weight is also a major result of all of the side effects listed above.
Sleep is more important than it seems. It could affect one’s health in a drastic way. Thus, teenagers need to get enough sleep to take care and maintain their mental health.
